Ballonen – prison turned youth hostel

Christiansø’s former state prison, Ballonen, has been converted into a small youth hostel with five cells that can accommodate one to two people each, as well as all practical facilities.

However, there are only bars on the window of one cell. This is the cell on the first floor where the dissident Dr Dampe was imprisoned for 15 years.

Try spending the night in a cell and experience the feeling of the heavy door slamming shut behind you.

Ballonen is open all year round.

Price per cell: DKK 420 per night

NOTE: Booking for peak season (15/6–15/8) opens on 1 April
